Case Study: A Global Life Sciences Company Enhances Governance and Safeguards Growth with Standardized Project and Portfolio Management

Industry: Healthcare equipment and services
Size: 7,000 employees

The customer: enhancing the health of pets, people, and livestock

A multinational organization specializing in veterinary diagnostic instruments, laboratory services, and food and water safety testing supports the health of animals and people worldwide. Its solutions are available in over 175 countries.

The challenge: ensuring project management rigor and consistency

A global leader in diagnostics invests tens of millions of dollars annually in research and development to bring innovative products and services to market and support rapid growth. These R&D efforts often span several years and involve thousands of professionals worldwide, from scientists and engineers to marketing and finance specialists.

After joining a major stock index in 2017, the company elevated its profile as a global investment opportunity. To protect shareholder value and strengthen governance, its leadership team sought greater rigor and visibility into R&D projects, along with consistent processes across international teams.

Previously, teams relied on spreadsheets and disconnected systems, but the organization recognized the need for a standardized approach and a single platform to deliver accurate financial, resource, and project insights, as well as realistic product roadmaps.

The solution: standardized system and processes globally

Having successfully partnered with Rego Consulting to improve its IT project practices, a global life sciences company re-engaged the firm to enhance its R&D project and resource management capabilities.

Rego collaborated with the organization’s project management office (PMO) and its scientific community to define standardized project management processes, deploy Clarity, and introduce simplified versions of project management, resource management, and timesheets.

This represented a significant cultural as well as procedural shift for the R&D community. Rego supported organizational change management led by the client’s PMO, creating training videos for scientists worldwide and providing classroom training for users and managers.

Clarity was configured to reflect the new processes, with knowledge transfer to internal staff so the system could be managed in-house and support costs reduced. Reporting and portlets were developed to meet specific requirements, while RegoXchange™ provided access to hundreds of ready-to-use Clarity PPM solutions such as portlets, reports, and training material that could be adapted and deployed cost-effectively.

The benefits: Enhanced governance and visibility

With the adoption of standardized processes and systems, more than 500 global staff—many previously unfamiliar with timesheets or formal project tools—are now aligned under a single approach.

Key improvements include centralized project visibility, clearer resource and budget management, and on-demand reporting that delivers executive-level insights into complex, long-term projects.

Through its partnership with Rego Consulting, the organization has enhanced governance and visibility of R&D initiatives, ensuring investments are safeguarded and growth is supported.

Rego Consulting took time to understand our unique culture and community and define processes and solutions that were workable and effective. The team also passed on immense knowledge and experience so that we could continue to adapt the solution as we matured and reduce support costs.
